OpenAI Confirms: ChatGPT Ads Limited to US, No Global Rollout Planned

OpenAI told BleepingComputer that ChatGPT advertisements remain limited to the United States and that the company has “nothing new to share about a global rollout.” The clarification follows reader concern after references to ads appeared in an updated OpenAI privacy policy.

OpenAI first announced plans to test ads in the US on January 16, 2026, in a blog post by Fidji Simo. The company began rolling ads to US users on February 9, 2026, and COO Brad Lightcap described the approach as “iterative” while speaking at the India AI Summit, according to TechCrunch.

OpenAI emphasized the separation between advertising systems and its chat model. In company documents, OpenAI said, “Ads run on separate systems from our chat model, and advertisers have no ability to shape, rank, or alter ChatGPT’s responses.” The company also noted that “Ads are separate and clearly labeled. Ads are paid placements, and seeing an ad doesn’t mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser or its products or services.”

Fidji Simo’s January blog post laid out how ads would work and the principles guiding the experiment. “People trust ChatGPT for many important and personal tasks, so as we introduce ads, it’s crucial we preserve what makes ChatGPT valuable in the first place,” Simo wrote. She added, “Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you. Answers are optimized based on what’s most helpful to you. Ads are always separate and clearly labeled.”

OpenAI described the technical setup as contextual ad placement. Ads are shown below AI answers when there is a relevant sponsored product or service tied to the conversation.

The company said targeting is based on the current chat context rather than long-term behavioral tracking, and personalization can be turned off by users. OpenAI also said ads are blocked from appearing near health, mental health, and political content.

Eligibility rules come from OpenAI’s documentation: logged-in adults in the US on Free and Go plans may see ads, while users under 18, and subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise plans, are excluded. OpenAI also noted users can opt out of personalization and pay for ad-free access.

Some commercial details about the ad program have been reported by ad industry outlets. Those reports indicate early partners include Shopify, Target, and Adobe, and that initial inventory is available through select programmatic relationships rather than a self-serve platform. Industry reports have also suggested premium CPMs and sizable minimum commitments for early buyers.

OpenAI has framed advertising as one piece of a broader revenue strategy. Simo emphasized choice and privacy, saying, “You control how your data is used. You can turn off personalization, and you can clear the data used for ads at any time. We’ll always offer a way to not see ads in ChatGPT, including a paid tier that’s ad-free.” Brad Lightcap told TechCrunch that if ads are done right, they can be “additive” to the product experience, but the rollout will take time to refine.

For now, the takeaway is straightforward: OpenAI confirmed to BleepingComputer that ChatGPT ads are being tested in the US only, and there is no announced timeline for a broader launch.
